The sun damages your eyes by exposing them to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is invisible light energy that penetrates the cornea, lens, and retina. UV-B rays are the high-energy surface rays that cause sunburn. UV-A rays enter the eyes and can damage the fragile structures. Over time, prolonged, unprotected UV exposure can damage the delicate tissues of the eye. Short-term, intense UV exposure can cause photokeratitis, which is essentially a corneal sunburn. Photokeratitis causes redness, grittiness, and painful light sensitivity.

Long-term damage builds gradually and causes a variety of issues, including cataracts (clouding of the eye), pterygium and pinguecula (growths on the white of the eye), and eyelid skin cancers. Some studies suggest that cumulative UV exposure may contribute to the development or progression of age-related macular degeneration, a progressive condition that can cause vision loss. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the National Eye Institute (NEI) strongly recommend guarding your eyes from UV-A and UV-B rays to reduce the risk of long-term eye damage.

The more you incorporate them into your daily life, the more protection your eyes have against short-term and long-term sun damage. Wear Sunglasses with 100 Percent UV Protection

Look for a UV400 or “100% UV protection” label when shopping for new sunglasses. These show that the lenses effectively block UV wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, covering both UV-A and UV-B rays. The darkness of the lenses and a higher price do not equal adequate protection. In fact, a dark lens without a UV rating can allow your pupils to open wider, letting in more UV rays. Well-fitting wraparound frames that cover the sides are ideal.

Add a Broad-Brimmed Hat

Sunglasses often leave gaps around the top and side, where light from above or reflected from other surfaces can enter. A wide-brimmed hat with a brim of at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) helps shade the face, ears, and neck and can block up to 50% of the UV rays that would otherwise reach your eyes. Together, a hat and sunglasses cover far more than either does on its own. If you expect to be outdoors for an extended period, it’s important to wear a hat and UV400 sunglasses the entire time.

However, because many windshields block the UV light needed to activate them, they may not become fully dark while driving. For maximum comfort in bright sunlight, prescription sunglasses may still be the better option.

Never Look Directly at the Sun

You were probably told to never look at the sun as a child, but it is truly one of the most important things to remember when you’re outdoors. Staring directly at the sun, even briefly, can cause solar retinopathy, which is irreversible damage to the retina. Many think that looking at the sun during an eclipse is not as bad, but it is equally harmful. There is no safe amount of direct sun-gazing, so keep your eyes shielded when you have to look in the direction of the sun.

Check Your Medications for Photosensitivity

Some common medications, including antibiotics, diuretics, and certain acne treatments, can make your eyes and skin more sensitive to UV light. Other drug categories, like cardiovascular medications, antihistamines, and chemotherapy drugs, carry the same risk. If you're unsure whether one of your medications increases UV sensitivity, ask your pharmacist or prescribing physician.

Do Not Rely on Car Windows

Most windshields block nearly all UVB and much of UVA, but side windows often allow significantly more UVA to pass through. Don’t treat your car like a safe zone. You may still want to wear sunglasses while driving, especially on long drives or during bright midday hours. If you spend a lot of time in your car every day, consider other ways to reduce UV exposure.

Time Your Sun Exposure and Check the UV Index

UV is typically strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m... Remember that UV rays also reflect off water, sand, and concrete, increasing the amount of ultraviolet light reaching your eyes even if you're sitting under an umbrella. Check the daily UV index every morning and plan around the peak times to minimize exposure. In Miami, the UV index is high year-round, so don’t be mistaken that there are periods when it’s safe to be without sun protection. Remember that UV exposure can still be significant during cooler weather and throughout the winter months. 

What Are the Signs of Sun Damage to Your Eyes?

Signs of sun damage to your eyes include grittiness, pain, or redness with light sensitivity after intense sun exposure, which may indicate photokeratitis. Visible bumps or growths on the white of the eye can also indicate sun damage, as can a persistent spot or lesion on the skin of your eyelid. It’s crucial to know when to act on potential sun damage. Photokeratitis usually resolves within a day or two. However, persistent pain and sudden vision changes warrant a call to our emergency eye care team.

Growths on the eye and any lasting eyelid lesions should be evaluated as soon as possible during a comprehensive eye exam.
